This edition of Voltaire's Poem upon the Lisbon disaster was designed by Michael McCurdy at the Penmaen Press in Lincoln, Massachusetts during the spring & summer of 1977. Anthony Hecht translated the poem especially for the Penmaen Press, using the Pléiade edition of 1961. Michael Bixler set the French text in Monotype Blado and the English in Poliphilus. The deluxe edition was printed on French Rives, and the special & regular editions on Ragston. The book was hand-printed by Michael McCurdy & Evelyn Clarke. Lynd Ward's engravings were struck from the blocks. Deborah McCurdy provided editorial assistance. One hundred books numbered I-C comprise the deluxe edition and are signed by Messrs. Hecht, Ward and Wilson. The special edition is numbered 1-200 and is also signed. The unsigned edition consists of 200 copies. The deluxe books were hand-bound by the Harcourt Bindery.
