This is copy number [59] of a special edition of one hundred copies each signed by the author and the engraver. The text is printed letterpress in 11 point Plantin on Zerkall mould-made paper. The engravings are printed letterpress from the wood, that on the title page being unique to this edition. The book was designed by Christopher Skelton. The first twenty-five copies have been hand bound by Clare Skelton in leather with vellum sides and are accompanied in the slip-case by a set of proofs of the nineteen wood engravings by Simon Brett, printed on japon and signed by the artist. Of these copies, the first has been presented to the Very Reverend Sydney Evans, Dean of Salisbury, at whose request To the Cross was written. The seventy-five copies numbered 26 to 100 have been bound in cloth and in a decorated paper designed from the engravings in the book. Of these, ten have been presented to the Governors of the Sarum Saint Michael Educational Charity, whose generosity is acknowledged in the preface. Due to an almost symbolic accident during printing, when a four-point lead split the wood, the engraving of Pilate on page 19 has been printed from a line block and not from the wood as stated in the colophon. Fortunately, all the proofs accompanying the first 25 copies had been taken from the wood blocks previously. [Gesigneerd door Michael Justin Davis en Simon Brett].
