The Steadfast Tin Soldier began as a lecture. An annotated version, translated by Harry Lake, appeared in Quaerendo 20, 1990. Bram de Does designed and set the text by hand in Enschedé English-bodied Roman No. 6, with one point leading, combined with Enschedé Initials No. 7, both generously made available by Joh. Enschedé, Haarlem. To set the text the pages of Van Ulenspieghels Leven (1943) had to be distributed. The book was printed in letterpress by Bram de Does, Aartswoud, on his Victoria platen press using Zerkall Ivory. The offset illustration was printed by Jan de Jong, Amsterdam. Eric Schots, Krommenie, bound a standard edition of 175 numbered copies in strong paper made from linen rags, and a de luxe edition of 20 numbered copies in half vellum. Numbers I-LV are not for sale. The endpapers of the standard edition and the cover paper of the luxe edition were marbled by Bram de Does. This is number [XXXVIII].
