New borders: the working life of Elizabeth Friedlander

This book has been printed on an Arab treadle press using Bembo types on Zerkall papers. The letter-press reproduction of illustrations has been from a wide variety of sources, including photo-copies, old proofs, printed copies and Elizabeth Friedlaender's often gum-stained rough art work. The workers at the Block Shop in Manchester made printing them here possible. This has been done on a range of papers to reflect the diversity of the originals. John Mackness of Rushden in Northants made the slippers on page 64, and Gorton, Shorrock & Davies of Ancoats printed the colour plates on pages 23, 38, 73 & 74, and tried their hand with the duotone on page 53. The patterned paper samples on pages 40 and 85 to 90 are originals printed at Curwen Press. The wood-engravings on pages 80 to 82 are printed from the original wood at Incline Press, where Mouldtype's setting went through the stick and the hand setting was done. The binding of this edition of 350 copies has been done throughout by hand by Stephen Conway, Elaine Lonsdale and Graham Moss. Of these, 325 are bound in buckram and a Curwen patterned paper designed by Elizabeth Friedlander, contained in a slip-case. The remaining twenty-five copies have been bound in Islandreagh linen cloth and a Friedlander paper, with a port-folio of five full sheets of her Curwen papers, similarly bound, both being contained in a Solander box with a false spine. All copies are numbered, this being 125 of 325 and are signed by the author [Pauline Pauker].
